tl;dr: after just 9 months, Realm is now running on well over 100M devices around the world and powers the apps of Fortune 500 companies, banks, healthcare providers, #1 app store hits & more, and Realm Inc. just raised $20M in Series B funding. You can read more about it in these fine publications: TechCrunch, VentureBeat, Forbes or Business Insider. We are hiring.
9 months ago, we publicly released the labor of 3 years, a new mobile database that runs directly on phones, tablets or smartwatches. To be honest, we were not sure what to expect. Would people understand our design for easier mobile development? Was the need for a new, mobile database as strong as we felt it? It’s fair to say we missed a few things, and have more work ahead of us than behind us, but overall product fit was almost instantaneous.
In 9 months, we’ve been adopted by Fortune 500 companies, banks, healthcare providers, big-name startups, #1 app store hits and many, many more. This list includes Groupon, Buzzfeed, Intuit, Rite Aid, SAP, Zynga, Hipmunk, Coinbase, Expensify, Wahoo Fitness and many more amazing apps that are just getting started. Developers use us in many ways, but more often than not, we have the responsibility of being their data model, their primary data store and sometimes the repository of sensitive financial or medical data.
Overall, these apps tell us they use Realm on well over 100M unique devices around the world.
Think about that for a second. This means that our little baby affects the life & experience of millions of people around the world every day, if not every minute. That the tiny database we carefully crafted & assembled, somehow, through the power of mobile, found itself running on more hardware around the world than most databases.
This post was supposed to be about our $20M series B funding, but we haven’t had much time to think about it this week. Twenty-one of us have been grouped in our San Francisco office all week, running one of our twice-yearly all-hands, and the conversations have been, as they always have, about our users, our software, and how to improve it. Which is not to say this influx of money was not needed; with it you can expect us to improve the products you use today, bring Realm to more platforms, extend our team & support around, the, globe, and work on more clearly packaging & selling the enterprise products & services we already generate revenue from today.
After 9 months, our life is just getting started. We’re trying to build the best damn database for mobile developers, one GitHub issue at a time. You should join us.
