Young children can seem to “get” touch devices right away, but there are a number of things you can do to maximize their engagement and minimize their frustration. Through a tour of apps currently on the market, we’ll explore techniques such as using characters as guides, giving audio and visual input feedback, and monitoring inactivity timeouts. We’ll also cover which gestures are the most and least intuitive for small fingers, how the way children hold tablets affects UI, and what content to include for parents (and for legal reasons) and how. You’ll leave with a better understanding of the UI elements necessary to make a captivating children’s app that parents are happy to buy.
